To impart knowledge about the intensity of stress among exam going students among South Indian population. The importance of stress was also achieved during this study.
Stress is the body’s reaction to any change that requires an adjustment or response. The body reacts to these changes with physical, mental, and emotional responses. Stress is a normal part of life. You can experience stress from your environment, your body, and your thoughts. Even positive life changes such as a promotion, a mortgage, or the birth of a child produce stress.Stress that continues without relief can lead to a condition called distress – a negative stress reaction. Distress can disturb the body’s internal balance or equilibrium, leading to physical symptoms such as headaches, an upset stomach, elevated blood pressure , chest pain, sexual dysfunction, and problems sleeping. Emotional problems can also result from distress. These problems include depression, panic attacks, or other forms of anxiety and worry.
The stress also can bring on or worsen certain symptoms or diseases. Stress is linked to 6 of the leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cihrosis of liver, and suicide.
Stress also becomes harmful when people engage in the compulsive use of substances or behaviors to try to relieve their stress. These substances or behaviors include food, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, gambling, sex, shopping, and the Internet. Rather than relieving the stress and returning the body to a relaxed state, these substances and compulsive behaviors tend to keep the body in a stressed state and cause more problems. The distressed person becomes trapped in a vicious circle.
Various studies across the globe have emphasised that students undertaking professional courses, such as medical and dental studies, are subjected to higher stress. Excessive stress could lead to psychological problems like depression and anxiety. Because college students often adopt unhealthy eating habits, sacrifice sleep for extensive studying and social activity, or consume alcohol and other substances as part of their regular activities, their physical health can become compromised. Students who are chronically tired or do not feel well because of these contributing factors will find that their performance or attendance in class suffers. They also have less energy than healthier students to devote to academic and social concerns, which results in their need to take more time to perform tasks and study for classes. The excessive time required to achieve their goals can become an additional contributor to stress.
Consistently poor academic performance leads to the threat of failure and expulsion, a large contribution to student stress levels. One of the side effects of this kind of stress is depression, which can lead to absenteeism or feelings of hopelessness that interfere with effective study habits and then further weaken academic achievement.Stress arises when the combination of internal and external pressures exceeds the individual’s resources to cope with their situation.
For many young adults, college is the best time of life. These critical years can also be undermined by depression, anxiety and stress. Students are very likely to experience some or many stressors which may test their ability to cope: adapting to a new environment, balancing a heavy work load, making new friends, becoming more independent, and dealing with myriad of other issues.Looking from a closer perspective, the college students’ encounters a number of challenges in his day to day life, therefore the whole idea of an existing and vibrant college life is unveiled by these challenges which in turn contribute to stress and if not dealt with can only escalate and hamper their academic performance, emotional and social well-being.
Students react to college in a variety of ways. For some students, college is stressful because it is an abrupt change from high school. For others, separation from home is a source of stress. Although some stress is necessary for personal growth to occur, the amount of stress can overwhelm a student and affect the ability to cope.
AIM- Intensity of stress among exam going students among south indian population.
OBJECTIVE- To create awareness about intensity of stress among exam going students.
MATERIALS AND METHODS- Questionnaire was prepared and survey was conducted among students about intensity of stress among exam going students and data was collected. The survey was prepared on survey planet and was circulated among students.
The survey was conducted among 106 students.

80% of the students feel stressed during their college year. 33.3% of the students have anxiety and 30.4% of them have depression during the examination. So the intensity of stress among the students is high.
The survey was conducted among 106 students from that their causes of stress in their life is due to college which is about 26.6%. Most of them have headaches when they are stressed. None of them are not willing to manage their stress and health during their examination and also on their day to day academic life.
The discussion covers various aspects of the stress among exam going students. The students aged between 15-23 years are very much stressed. Most of the relieve their stress by sleeping which is about 44.1%. Students are affected by anxiety and depression. The causes of stress in their life is due to college/school students which is 46.6%. Our society is experiencing lots of stress in various aspects, so one should learn to manage their stress to lead an healthy lifestyle.
