In the past ten years, social media have become widespread very fast within each country. Internet access and reported smartphone ownership rates increase is one of the reason that social media become so popular in internet. At the same time, the main reason for people spend time on internet to use social media to keep in touch with their friends, family and love one. Different researches established that online communications positively help the individuals’ in building social trust and motivating them for participation in community life (Kobayashi T, Ikeda K, Miyata K (2006)1).
Today’s children and teenagers will never know a world without social media or hand-held technology. Facebook users seem to be getting younger and younger, as I personally have had several family members between the ages of 10 and 15-years-old send me a friend request on Facebook ( Samantha, O.P , 20142). According to a report?last year by the nonprofit child advocacy group Common Sense Media, 20 percent of teenagers said that social media makes them feel more confident but only 4 percent of them said it makes them feel less so. “On the whole, teens said that they feel that social media has a more positive than negative impact on their social and emotional lives,” said Shira Lee Katz, Common Sense Media’s director of digital media. “They believe that social media helps their friendships, makes them feel more outgoing and gives them confidence.”3
Now a days, most of the parents are working busty and have not enough time to spend with their children. So the teenagers are try to seek more attention in the social media. Ana Homayoun(2018) stated that the young people want their opinions to be heard. Many tweens and teens find their online communities are engaging, interactive and responsive. A message or Snapchat sent to a friend can result in an instant reply, and something posted to a group chat or online profile can create the opportunity for community-level conversation and engagement. The responses from their friends and followers make kids feel heard and listened to.4
As a parent, though, I know that I am responsible for making sure that my kids are ready for all that freedom — and that they know how to keep themselves safe. Here’s to staying on top of all the changes social media is bringing to our kids’ lives, so that we can continue to guide and support them in this fast-changing world (Melinda Gates, 2017)5.
However, Harleenan feel that social media will lead negative effect to the family. She state that A normal healthy family conversation or gathering has now been replaced by messaging sessions, thus cause to abbreviated words that lack true emotions between the family members. These poor communication will lead to relationship problem in a family, as you do not speak to each other any longer, instead prefer talking to people online, whom you may not even know. Endless hours of Internet surfing and chatting with others will reduce family activity time together.(2011)6
