Are the Beatles the Greatest Band Ever?
The Beatles were an English rock and roll band, the most admired and popular of the 1960s and one of the most influential in modern music. However, there is always a question that make people think “Are the Beatles the greatest band ever?”. Well, I have been reading articles and magazines about their music career and achievements. In my opinion they are the greatest band ever this is because for the short time the band was around, they changed and evolved further and quicker than most bands in rock history. Their sound went from Pop through almost every genre of music. The Beatles is the best-selling band in history according to EMI Records Ltd. EMI records states that they have sold more than a billion units worldwide. A lot of bands even today have an immense amount of respect for the Beatles. Even though more than 50 years have passed since their debut, the iconic band still has a big impact in the music industry.
The Beatles went through several name changes. First, they called themselves the Quarrymen, then they became Johnny and the Moondogs. Later the Silver Beatles and eventually the Beatles. The Beatles came from Liverpool, England, and the band was composed of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. If the great Elvis Presley dominated the 1950s as the king of rock and roll, it corresponded to the Beatles, a group also rocker in its roots, to exercise hegemony in the following decade with a very sophisticated amalgam of styles that would bring pop music to all audience and preluded posterior genres. In the early 1960s, “Beatlemania” came to be the hysteria that rocked the whole Britain, the United States, and the rest of the world. (New York Times, Majerol, 2013). The Beatles were so popular that they even became trendsetters. Beatle’s music was drastically different from the predominant pop music of teen idols such as Frankie Avalon in the United States. No one in America had heard of the Beatles; but the explosion of the Beatles in America was the result of combined forces when they performed live on the Ed Sullivan Show, in which they drew the Tv largest audience in television history and marked the beginning of the “British Invasion” in the music history. (New York Times, Majerol). Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely-Hearts Club Band (1967) is considered the greatest album of all time by Rolling Stones Magazine. It won four Grammy awards and it was ranked at number one on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time”CITATION Rol12
l 1033 (Rolling Stone, 2012).They were even included in the Time’s list of most important people of 20th century. They had made more than forty different songs that reached the top of the charts. The Beatles have been influenced by American music principally by Elvis Presley, as they have mentioned themselves. The influence of Beatle’s legacy through the decades has been immense not just in rock and roll but in the whole music industry. Their music created social impact as well. During 1960s occurred different social movements and the Beatles became a major influence in these movements such as, gay rights movement, women’s movement and bohemianism movement; therefore, it is referred to as an important social moment in the 20th century.
In the end, I believe there is no doubt why the Beatles are the greatest band of all time. What makes the Beatles songs timeless? This is because they were unique and they wanted each album to show progress. They created songs in every sub-genre of rock from Hard rock/Metal to Art rock to Blues, they did everything. They were geniuses indeed. Their songs talk mostly about personal stories and they can relate to almost anyone in any situation. They changed the way people listened and felt to music. All their albums they made were masterpieces. I will say though without Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly both the Beatles would have probable been less than they were. But all in all, there would be absolutely none of these bands without Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Paganini, Vivaldi, Chopin and many other composers.
