As professional learner I can help students by
telling them to focus on the class lectures and course reading material
which can point to more effective learning. Recapture their previous
knowledge about a topic, taking notes, organizing information can help
students to learn more effectively. Key and quality considerations like
promoting active communication among the instructors and learners
encourage participating actively, providing appropriate feedback on time,
respect various talents and different ways of learning.
Inform their professional role with relevant strategy, policy, and
An important aspect to promote learning is to
continuously support the learners; this will help them to figure out what
are their learning needs. It is important to give and receive fair
feedback and boosting others to adopt a thoughtful approach in their daily
work. Be kind, open and easily accessible. Promote and support learning
and always take a view point in affinity to regulations.
Use a variety of methods for evaluating their role in supporting
The three main approaches of learning are “Behaviorist
approach”, “Cognitive approach” and “Humanist approach”. Most of learning
approaches fall into one or all of three. In behaviorist approach the
learner can acquire knowledge by constant repetition of a task. A vital component
of the behavioral approach is to define clear set of instructions in the
beginning and then provide the opportunities of learning to make sure that
the required objectives are achieved. Cognitive learning is where learning
is through thinking and an individual acquires knowledge via experiences
and senses. In this approach the presenter chooses the best possible
method to convey the learning. Humanist approach is a student-centered
approach and the educator act as a facilitator. In this approach the learner learns at its own pace.
Use a variety of appropriate approaches to enable learning
Defend master’s thesis successfully, study for
GMAT, apply and complete GMAT. Look
for a PhD program at U of T or Ryerson or McMaster. Meet with PhD staff
and professors at universities of interest. Apply scholarships during studies.
Do TA work and teach as seasonal instructor at College University while
studying PhD/ then apply for a teaching position.
Undertake appropriate development activities
To pursue a career in academia, write my GMAT.
Apply for a PhD, successfully complete my PhD, and apply for teaching
positions in college or university.
Planning for continuing professional development
I want to pursue a career in academia, which
involves both teaching and research.
Identifying professional development goals, directions, and priorities
Core Development Outcomes
As professional learner my role is to back the
academic activity and help other professionals who are working hard to
guide and work with other professionals on daily basis to come up with
heighten academic practice which will result in an enriched learning
experience for students and other professional learners. We need to bring
people on board coach them and find ways to assure to feel success and
transform their practice. People should feel safe and can say it’s ok to
take a little bit of risk. Almost everyone is doing something well and
contributing in its own way, recognizing one’s strength is important as it
will boost the moral to do more and even better.
Developing people and processes
As professional learner it is important to
advance our practice by looking into our reflection as it is an important
part of our academic practice. By our reflections we can connect to others
and can share our ideas, experiences and can learn from these
conversations. It is important to do self assessment or self-critique for
continued competence. Making sure to develop processes and practices which
will support the professional and student learning. Identify programs and
develop valuable courses that target a wide range of participants and
Continuing reflection on professional practice
As learning professional it is important to treat
each student as an individual and respect for who he or she is. Straight
out if there are any language arrangements that affect any individual or a
group. Ask your students that you want to learn about different cultures
other than you own so that you get an idea of the cultural atmosphere of
the class. Treat all students with same level of respect for their
abilities that will give them confidence. Include inclusive syllabus that
reflects about a society with different ethnic cultures. Arrange lectures
by inviting guest speakers to promote diversity. Prepare assignments and
exams that recognize student’s interest and their cultural backgrounds.
An example from workshop “Inclusive Classroom”
where a student is facing problem by not being getting adjusted due to his
age and preference to work individually and not in a group. He is mature
and has industry experience and wants to work on assignments at his own
ease pace. But the instructor has to use a collective approach and move
forward working with all students together.
Working effectively with diversity and promoting inclusivity
learning professional working together with peers, colleagues, and other
professional individuals by sharing ideas and practice. Get engaged in
activities to improve professional skills and knowledge. Active
participation in the professional organizations for continuous collective
growth. Work and
promote the development of communities that are secure and supporting to
benefit student learning. Analyzing student work and coming up with
solutions to modify the instructional methods.
Working in and developing learning communities
A teacher must be committed to students success
and learning. As learning professional it is important that, whatever I am
suggesting and recommending must have a solid background and evidence
available that can support it. Providing references from extant literature
and testing the validity of our work by applying research techniques. Ethical
standards in a teaching profession is to be “caring” that means to be
accepting and taking interest to develop students ability to learn to its
maximum potential by providing the best quality of service. Always promote
“trust” by being fair, open and honest in your acts. Treating others with
“respect” by considering and respecting their culture, background and
language. Maintain “integrity” in the professional activities and
An example from a workshop for “TA/GA” regarding
the academic integrity where a student submits an assignment which
contains a couple of sentences copied word to word without any reference.
Clear instructions about plagiarism were provided in the course outline.
This situation should be addressed according to the institution policy for
Scholarship, professionalism, and ethical practice
An example from a workshop for “Marking Essays
and Short Answer Questions” providing feedback after marking the essays
and papers. Don’t over-comment on each and every mistake this can
discourage and lower student’s moral. The comments should be organized and
mention the important issues first.
teacher it is my job to understand and recognize the different patterns of
learning that are preferred by students, so that highest learning potential is
achieved. An example from the class about a technique “One-minute paper” in which a professor while conducting a
lecture asks the students to write a one-minute paper based on their
understanding and knowledge about a particular problem in order to access
student learning. After reviewing students response to the problem the
instructor develops a model to suggest or address a solution to the problem. By
listening to the instructors thinking process the students can learn how they
can think effectively by themselves.
Learning is to gain knowledge and acquire
expertise over time. People learn in different ways based on their
ability, comfort level and flexibility.
There are different learning styles such as visual, verbal, physical,
logical, social, etc. Every student may possess different learning style
and one can recognize that by looking at the patterns in which student
prefers to learn. For example, a student may prefer to learn verbally may
also be social and prefers to make use of his basic skills to learn. It is
important to recognize how a student learns, as most of the times teachers
adopts their preferred learning style and if the student is not
comfortable with it or have a different preference then it gets difficult
and annoying to learn.
